Rainforest Carbon Offset Program

Human activity is accelerating climate change, and we must act now to minimize its impacts. A first step is for each of us to reduce our carbon emissions through fuel efficiency and changes in lifestyles and business practices. Our Rainforest Carbon Offsets program allows you to offset what remains of your personal contribution to the rise in greenhouse gases, helping to slow down and ultimately reverse the rise in atmospheric CO2 level.

WLT-US is a conservation organization that purchases and protects rainforests and other threatened habitats and wildlife. Our Rainforest Carbon Offsets program works hand-in-hand with our conservation programs, by purchasing and protecting tropical forests that would otherwise be deforested. This not only saves their extraordinary biodiversity, but prevents the release of their carbon. Current science estimates that 20% of all CO2 released into the atmosphere today is a direct result of the destruction of forests.

How the Rainforest Carbon Offset Calculator works:

This calculator gives an estimate of your total carbon emissions based closely on the data and calculation methods of the EPA, with the following changes:

1) We double the emissions caused by air travel to take account of radiative forcing of carbon emissions at high altitudes.

2) We add the "General" category to include the carbon footprint of US citizens (reported by the United Nations to be 20.4 metric tons of CO2 per capita in 2004). Most carbon calculators ignore this important data, therefore underestimate personal carbon emissions.

3) We show your emissions in metric tons (the international unit for carbon dioxide), which is equal to 2,204 pounds.
